Sportsmates vs Mii: Which Avatar Should You Use
Sportsmates and Mii characters in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: how the two avatar systems differ, what each can customise, and which one fits your setup.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort gives you two avatar systems. Sportsmates are the stylised characters introduced with Nintendo Switch Sports; Mii characters are the older, more customisable system that has been in Nintendo games for two decades. Both are fully supported, and the choice is not cosmetic-only.
Sportsmates
The default. Sportsmates are built for the game's proportions: they move well in motion-controlled sports and their clothing is designed around their body shapes.
- Designed for the sports animations, so swings and celebrations read clearly.
- Full outfit support from the Item Center and achievement rewards.
- Preset-driven appearance: face, hair and build options rather than free editing.
The advantage is coherence. Everything the game's customisation system produces was authored for these proportions, and it shows in how the outfits sit.
Mii characters
The legacy option, and the one long-time players reach for.
- Deeper facial editing, using the Mii maker tools players already know.
- Recognisable in multiplayer, because a Mii reads as a person rather than a character.
- Outfit support, though the fit is adapted rather than authored for the proportions.
The advantage is identity. A Mii of yourself, or of a friend in the room, makes a four-player session funnier in a way a Sportsmate cannot.
What each can and cannot do
| Sportsmates | Mii | |
|---|---|---|
| Face and hair editing | Preset options | Full Mii maker |
| Body editing | Body types | Limited |
| Outfits | All, authored for the build | All, adapted |
| Saved outfits | Yes | Yes |
| Multiplayer read | Character-like | Person-like |
Where you change either
Both avatar systems are edited in the same place: the Customise icon on the home screen, which has tabs for outfits and accessories, appearance, and body. Switching between Sportsmate and Mii happens there too, and saved outfits carry across.
That shared editor is why the choice is low-risk: you can switch later without losing the wardrobe you have built.
Which to pick
- Pick a Sportsmate if you want the game to look the way it was designed to look, and if you care about how outfits sit on the character.
- Pick a Mii if you are playing with people who know each other, if you want a character that looks like you, or if you have Mii data you want to bring across.
Both support the same unlockables, both work online, and both appear in Island Crown. Nothing in the progression system is gated behind one or the other.
A note on the cast
The game's Island Crown opponents are a mix: some are Sportsmates, some are Mii characters with names series fans will recognise. That mix is a fair summary of the game's own attitude: the two systems coexist rather than one replacing the other.
For the outfits themselves, see Outfits and Unlockables.
